Apple sells five ad formats on Apple News. One of them is called an App Download ad, and Apple describes it in nine words: it highlights your app and directs users to the App Store. That is the same destination your search campaigns point at, bought through a completely different machine — one with no attribution, no API, and no published price.
This is not an argument that Apple News is a bad buy. It is an argument that most app marketers have never established what kind of buy it is, because every instrument they normally use returns nothing when pointed at it. Below: what Apple documents, what it does not, and what the gap means for a budget line.
Apple’s advertiser page for Apple News names five formats: carousel, banner, App Download, video, and sponsored content. Four of them have a published specification page in Apple’s advertiser help — premium sponsorships, interstitials, direct response templates, sponsored content. The App Download ad does not.
There is no dimension table, no character limit, no description of what happens between the tap and the App Store product page. The direct response templates, the closest neighbouring format, come in five variants — none of them an App Download variant. Their call-to-action list includes “Download Now,” but Apple notes the three brand variants are “available for ads with supported external URL destinations,” which describes a web link, not a store link.
So the format is real enough that Apple markets it and, as we’ll see, requires it as an anchor unit for its most expensive product. It just has no public surface area. For a marketer used to the App Store side of Apple Ads — where even rejection reasons are enumerated as machine-readable API codes — this is a jarring downgrade in documentation quality within the same company.
On 14 April 2026, Apple published a news item titled “Take over Apple News feeds with premium sponsorships.” The specification page behind it is worth reading closely, because it does something unusual: it makes the App Download ad structurally load-bearing.
Premium sponsorships include your logo at the top of the chosen feed as well as accompanying ads … each sponsorship must be accompanied by at least one of the following: Large Banner, Large Direct Response (Left, Right, or Center), or an App Download ad.
Three eligible anchor units, and one of them is the app format. The same page notes that “Carousel and video formats are currently unavailable with Today feed premium sponsorship campaigns,” and closes with a line that tells you everything about the purchase model: “Please consult your account manager if there are questions.”
The specs that are published are physical: masthead logos 96–1280 px wide at aspect ratios from 3:4 to 10:1, PNG, 500 KB maximum; large banners at 1242 × 699 px; video 16:9 up to 250 MB. Everything about how the unit performs, costs, or reports is absent.
→ WHAT THIS TELLS YOU
Apple has designed a feed takeover that an app marketer can legitimately buy
This is not a display format that happens to permit an app link. Apple has written the App Download ad into the eligibility rules of its premium product. The demand-side intent is clear. The measurement layer behind it is not.
03Four values, and all of them are the App Store
The cleanest evidence of where Apple News sits in Apple’s own advertising architecture is an enumeration. Apple’s campaign object model defines SupplySource — “the ad placements for a campaign” — with exactly four values:
| SupplySource value | Surface | Campaign type | Billing |
APPSTORE_SEARCH_RESULTS | App Store search results | Search | Taps / CPC |
APPSTORE_TODAY_TAB | App Store Today tab | Display | Taps / CPC |
APPSTORE_SEARCH_TAB | App Store Search tab | Display | Taps / CPC |
APPSTORE_PRODUCT_PAGES_BROWSE | App Store product pages | Display | Taps / CPC |
No Apple News value. Be precise about what this proves and what it doesn’t: this is the object model of the older Campaign Management API, and it carries no Apple Maps value either, because Maps arrived later through a different interface. It establishes that the legacy campaign system was App Store-only — not, on its own, that News was excluded going forward.
The forward-looking question is answered by the replacement. The Apple Ads Platform API — the one that replaces v5 when it sunsets on 26 January 2027 — is described by Apple as managing campaigns on the App Store “along with ads on Apple Maps.” Maps was brought inside. News was not. There is no Apple News campaign object, no Apple News reporting endpoint, and no Apple News supply source in either the old system or the new one.
04The second door is closed too
When a platform gives you no first-party attribution, the standard workaround is third-party click measurement: you serve through a tag, the tag carries a macro that stamps a click ID, and your measurement partner reconciles the install against it. Apple’s publisher documentation for Apple News permits the tag and removes the macro.
Third-party ad tags and VAST tags can be used on Apple News … Macros embedded within ad or VAST tags aren’t supported and should be removed from tags for use on Apple News.
Meanwhile the first-party door is described by Apple in a single sentence. The AdServices framework exists to “attribute app-download campaigns that originate from the App Store on iOS devices.” AdAttributionKit, per Apple Ads’ own attribution overview, “contains records for all app conversions from the Apple App Store.”
Read those two scopes against the product. An App Download ad on Apple News originates in a news feed and terminates at the App Store. That is the inverse of the arrangement AdServices describes. Apple has never published a statement that Apple News installs are attributable — and, in fairness, has never published one saying they are not. The absence is symmetrical, and it is the finding.

Apple pages that describe install attribution for Apple News. Apple’s Apple News help section covers formats, specs, targeting, delivery and policy. Attribution, postbacks, install measurement and measurement partners are not mentioned on any of them, in either direction.
05An account manager and someone else’s ad server
There is no self-serve path. Apple’s own sponsorship page routes you to an account manager. Publisher-side delivery runs through Apple’s Workbench and Google Ad Manager 360, where Programmatic Guaranteed offers are negotiated on “deal terms, flight times, impression goals, targeting,” after which Ad Manager “will automatically generate a campaign for delivery on Apple News.” All bookings are treated as publisher direct-sold priority.
Google’s own documentation fills in the commercial shape: CPM, CPC and CPD models for direct deals, plus Programmatic Guaranteed and Preferred Deals via Display & Video 360, restricted to “AU, CA, the UK, and the US.” It also lists what doesn’t work — no Active View metrics, no dynamic allocation, no run-of-network targeting, and “Preview of creatives within Ad Manager is not available.”
That is a reserved-media buying motion. It has almost nothing in common with the auction you run on the App Store, where you set a maximum cost per tap and Apple prices each query. Any process that treats these as two line items in one channel plan is comparing a negotiated impression commitment against a bid.
06Apple’s own words for context versus intent
Apple News targeting is not thin. You can target on age, gender, device, OS version, geography, channel, section, article ID, issue ID, key-value pairs, scheduling in the user’s local time, Apple News+ subscriber status, and a set of sensitive-topic exclusions. Geographically it is more granular than App Store search advertising: US targeting reaches ZIP, city, DMA and state, with comparable units in Canada, the UK and Australia — derived, Apple says, from the Apple Account home address.
Two constraints matter. Apple states plainly that “First and third-party audience segments are not supported.” And personalised delivery has a floor: ads are “delivered only if more than 5,000 people meet the targeting criteria selected by an advertiser.”
But the sharpest statement of what you are actually buying comes from Apple’s privacy documentation, which describes the input data for each surface separately. Apple News and Stocks targeting is built on “the topics and categories of the stories you read and the publications you follow, subscribe to, or turn on notifications from.” App Store targeting is built on “your search terms, and information about the page you are viewing.”
Apple has written the distinction down itself. One surface infers what you are interested in. The other observes what you just typed. Those are not two flavours of the same signal, and they do not deserve the same cost per acquired user.
This is the whole Intent+ thesis in Apple’s own vocabulary. The App Store audience is the highest-value mobile audience in the world — that part is true of Apple News readers too, since they are the same wallets. What search adds is the interception of a declared intent at the exact moment it is declared. Apple News reaches the same people without that moment, which does not make it worthless; it makes it a different product at a different price.
07Apple’s combined case study reports no installs
On 3 March 2026 Apple published “Increasing impact with ads on Apple News and across the App Store,” pointing at a Playtika case study for Solitaire Grand Harvest’s Snoopy launch. It is the only public example of the two surfaces bought together. The campaign ran December 2024 – January 2025, so the numbers below are roughly eighteen months old at the time Apple published them and older still now.
| Surface | What Apple reports | Outcome metric present? |
| Apple News | 6.6 million impressions; 15% video completion rate | No — impressions and completion only |
| App Store, brand search | 100% higher tap-through rate | Engagement |
| App Store, generic search | 8× higher day-7 revenue uplift | Yes — revenue |
| App Store, overall | 20% higher conversion rate; 80% lower cost per install | Yes — cost and conversion |
| App Store, custom product pages | 300% tap-through-rate improvement | Engagement |
Apple’s own showcase for the combined buy reports installs, conversion rate, cost per install and day-7 revenue for the App Store — and impressions plus a video completion rate for Apple News. It does not attribute any App Store outcome to the Apple News spend, and no spend figure is disclosed for either surface, so not even a CPM can be derived. Playtika’s Tom Kaplan frames the approach as “a 360-degree approach to this Snoopy launch — aiming to be present and prominent everywhere across the Apple ecosystem,” which is an honest description of a presence strategy rather than a performance one.

08There is no price you can check
Apple publishes no rate card, no minimum spend and no CPM for Apple News. Neither does anyone else. Every Apple-related benchmark set in circulation — AppTweak, Adapty, SplitMetrics, Business of Apps — covers App Store placements only. We went through the entire 2026 benchmark landscape in detail and none of the four datasets, nor the two gated reports behind them, contains a single Apple News figure.
The consequence is easy to miss. On the App Store you can sanity-check a quoted cost per tap against four published panels that disagree by more than 2×, and that disagreement is itself informative. On Apple News there is no exterior reference point at all. Whatever your account manager quotes is the only number in the room.
The audience claims are better documented than the pricing, and worth reading with their footnotes attached. Apple’s claim to be “the #1 app among people under 45 for must-read content from the world’s leading publishers” is footnoted to Comscore MobileMetrix, September 2025 for the US and Canada, and Ipsos, September 2025 for the UK and Australia. Engagement claims — readers visiting “more than three times daily” and spending “over 12 minutes reading per day” — are Apple’s own first-party data from September 2025. Reach is left deliberately unquantified as “millions of unique visitors.”
The last officially disclosed monthly active user figure for Apple News is 125 million, given by Tim Cook on Apple’s Q2 FY2020 earnings call on 30 April 2020. That is six years old. Apple has not updated it publicly since, and has substituted an unquantified phrase on its own advertising page.
09What Apple built for Maps, and didn’t for News
The most useful comparison isn’t Apple News versus the App Store. It’s Apple News versus Apple Maps, because Maps is the surface Apple has spent 2026 actually integrating.
| Signal | Apple Maps ads | Apple News ads |
| Pre-announcement | “Get ready for ads on Apple Maps,” 24 Mar 2026 | None |
| Launch item | “Now route customers to your business…,” 21 Aug 2026 | None since Apr 2026 |
| In the Platform API | Yes — brands, locations, location groups | No |
| Bought self-serve | Yes, auction-based | No — account managed |
| Relevant to app installs | No — physical-location businesses only | Yes, nominally |
The irony is sharp. Maps is the surface Apple has wired into its advertising platform end to end, and it is explicitly not available to app marketers — it is sold to businesses with physical locations in the US and Canada. News is the surface that nominally sells app installs and has been left outside the platform entirely. Apple has published no roadmap statement, no “coming soon” language, and no indication either way about whether Apple News will ever enter the Apple Ads campaign interface.
Eric Seufert’s July 2026 reading of Apple’s rewritten advertising terms named Apple News as a current Apple Ads placement alongside the App Store, Stocks and MLS programming in the Apple TV app, and argued the Section 6(a) rewrite represents “a material expansion of the company’s advertising surface area” that would eventually require attribution-framework changes. We took that terms change apart in our own reading of the third-party expansion question. If he is right about the direction, the measurement gap described here is the first thing that has to close.
10What to actually do with this
Not “avoid Apple News.” The audience is real, the environment claim is at least partly defensible, and there are app categories — news, sports, finance, premium subscription products — where contextual adjacency to editorial has obvious value. The instruction is narrower and it is about accounting.
First, move the line item. Apple News belongs in the brand and reach budget, next to other reserved media, not in the UA budget next to a cost per tap. They are not comparable and one of them cannot be verified.
Second, agree the success metric before the insertion order, not after. If the only outcome data the channel can return is impressions, viewability-adjacent engagement and video completion, then those have to be the KPIs. Anything install-shaped that appears in a wrap report is modelled, not measured, and you should ask what model produced it.
Third, expect the measurement fight to be about coincidence. Run Apple News and App Store search concurrently and the search line will look better during the flight. Some of that will be real demand generation. Some of it will be organic search behaviour your paid brand campaign was already going to capture. Nothing in this stack can separate those two, which is the same problem in a different costume — and it’s the subject of our companion piece on incrementality.
Fourth, ask the account manager three questions in writing: what install attribution, if any, is available; whether any post-campaign report will contain installs and by what method; and whether a click ID can be passed to a measurement partner given that macros are stripped. If the answers are vague, price the buy as though the answer is none.
11What nobody knows
The honest list, as of 31 August 2026. There is no published spec sheet for the App Download ad format, and no published rate card, minimum spend or CPM for Apple News from Apple or any vendor. No third-party case study of its app-install performance exists beyond Apple’s own Solitaire Grand Harvest story — which reports no installs. There is no current monthly active user figure, and Apple News+ has never had a subscriber count disclosed.
Apple has made no statement, in either direction, about whether Apple News app-download installs are attributable, or about whether the inventory will ever enter the Apple Ads campaign interface. And the inventory-quality picture is contested: Apple describes a “premium environment … curated by real editors,” while John Gruber, writing on 23 July 2026, documented apparent scam ads from newly registered overseas domains and the same ad repeating three or four times within a single article. Those are independent observations, not a systematic study — but they are the only public counter-evidence that exists, and averaging them against Apple’s marketing copy would be dishonest in both directions.
Apple Ads on the App Store is a measured channel with a documented attribution API, an enumerated object model, four competing public benchmark panels and a published — if occasionally self-contradictory — help system. Apple News, sold by the same company under the same brand, has none of those things. Until that changes, it is not the same channel and should not be budgeted as though it were.
